Tips For Faster WiFi in Your Office

It’s hard to imagine an office environment where anything less than fast WiFi is acceptable. Even people who telecommute and work out of a home office need speed to participate in online conferences and simply get things done. If the response seems to be sluggish, here are some areas to explore in order to improve signal strength:

What’s the Actual Speed?

There’s often a difference between the top speed touted by a provider and what the end user experiences. In the best case scenario, the speed will only be slightly less than what the provider promises. If there is a significant amount of variance, the issue could have to do with the signal transmission to the router itself. If it happens to be below standards, the provider will need to isolate the issue and ensure the transmission is more in line with what the client is paying for. To check your actual speed there are tools like Speedtest that test it in real-time.

Checking for Interference

One of the reasons why the signal seems to be slow could be interference from other wireless networks in the immediate vicinity. Fortunately, there is a way to determine if other networks within range are operating on the same channels as the office network.

Check the channel of the router and the surrounding equipment using a WiFi channel scanner. There are smartphone apps that will perform the check as well as software that will load on a desktop or laptop computer. If this does turn out to be the reason for the sluggish performance, change the channel using the administrator controls or ask for help from the service provider to make a switch.

Location, Location… Location?

Another issue that could be causing the problem is the placement of the router. Take a look around the office and determine if it’s really in the best spot for easy access. Remember that the signal will be weaker if the router is located further away from the workstation. Finding a central location for the device will ensure that everyone in the office has a strong signal and doesn’t have to be concerned with lag times.

Check the Router Standards

Are the standards capable of handling the higher speeds of today? Older routers are not equipped to handle the higher frequencies used today. While they still work, the speed will be reduced. Updating to a router capable of handling higher frequencies and sporting a dual band will improve WiFi efficiency by a significant margin.

Keep in mind that most speed and connection issues can be identified with relative ease. Once the origin of the problem is isolated, correcting the issue is easier than most people think. The Information Technology team at the office can handle most of the problems, and the service provider can provide a technician who can handle the rest. Start checking into the situation today and the WiFi signal could be better than ever by tomorrow.
